The best CELPIP practice test is the one written by the people who make the exam, and several of those are free. This guide maps every free official CELPIP resource, explains which score Express Entry asks for (quoted from IRCC), and turns it all into a 4-week or 8-week study plan.

Quick definition first. CELPIP-General tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking and is the CELPIP version accepted for Express Entry. CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking and is meant for Canadian citizenship applications.

Where can you get free official CELPIP practice tests?

The official CELPIP site offers four free resources: an online sample test, a free practice test when you create a CELPIP Account, free practice tests available through a short form on the Free Practice Tests page, and more than 10 hours of free webinars. Use them before you pay for any mock test, because they match the real format.

Here is what each one gives you, what it asks for, and where it fits in a study plan. All four are listed on the CELPIP prep overview page and the Free Practice Tests page, checked on 11 October 2026.

A note on the form: read the marketing-consent line before you submit and untick it if you only want the tests. The Guidebook for Test Takers is a free PDF linked from the same prep page.

Unofficial sites also offer "CELPIP practice tests." We don't rate them here; treat them as extra drilling, never as a score predictor.

What is on the CELPIP-General test?

CELPIP-General has four computer-delivered components taken in one sitting of about 2 hours 50 minutes: Listening (46–55 minutes), Reading (43–56 minutes), Writing (53 minutes) and Speaking (15 minutes). In Speaking you reply out loud to on-screen prompts. Listening has 6 parts, Reading 4, Writing 2 tasks, Speaking 8 tasks.

Use this table as a checklist. Tick each part once you have practiced it under time. The part names come from the official CELPIP test format page, and the timings from the Free Practice Tests page.

ComponentTimeParts or tasks
Listening46–55 min1 Problem Solving · 2 Daily Life Conversation · 3 Listening for Information · 4 News Item · 5 Discussion · 6 Viewpoints
Reading43–56 min1 Reading Correspondence · 2 Reading to Apply a Diagram · 3 Reading for Information · 4 Reading for Viewpoints
Writing53 min1 Writing an Email · 2 Responding to Survey Questions
Speaking15 min1 Giving Advice · 2 Talking about a Personal Experience · 3 Describing a Scene · 4 Making Predictions · 5 Comparing and Persuading · 6 Dealing with a Difficult Situation · 7 Expressing Opinions · 8 Describing an Unusual Situation

Two details change how you practice. First, the Listening and Reading tests contain unscored items used for test development, and they look exactly like scored ones. You can't spot them, so give every question full effort. Second, CELPIP-General LS covers only Listening and Speaking and takes about 1 hour 10 minutes.

What CELPIP score do you need for Express Entry?

For CELPIP, the score level equals the CLB level, so CELPIP 7 means CLB 7. Federal Skilled Worker needs at least CLB 7 in all four abilities. Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 7 (TEER 0 or 1) or CLB 5 (TEER 2 or 3). Federal Skilled Trades needs CLB 5 speaking and listening, CLB 4 reading and writing.

The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) are the scale Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses to measure English ability. The CELPIP test format page shows a one-to-one match between CELPIP levels and CLB levels from 3 to 12. IRCC's Express Entry language test page states: "You must take the CELPIP-General test."

Express Entry programMinimum English level (per IRCC)CELPIP-General score needed
Federal Skilled WorkerCLB 7 in all 4 abilities7 in each component
Canadian Experience Class, TEER 0 or 1CLB 77 in each component
Canadian Experience Class, TEER 2 or 3CLB 55 in each component
Federal Skilled TradesCLB 5 speaking and listening, CLB 4 reading and writing5 in Speaking and Listening, 4 in Reading and Writing

Quoted from canada.ca on 11 October 2026. Higher scores also earn more selection points. On IRCC's Federal Skilled Worker selection factors page, CLB 7 gives 4 points per ability, CLB 8 gives 5, and CLB 9 or higher gives the maximum of 6.

Timing matters as much as the score. IRCC says your results "must be less than 2 years old" both when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence. CELPIP itself says scores are valid for two years from the date the score report is issued. Plan the test date so results don't expire before you apply.

CELPIP-to-CLB score ladder from CELPIP 4 to 12, where each CELPIP level equals the same CLB level, with CEFR levels A2 to C2 and markers for Federal Skilled Trades (4 reading and writing, 5 speaking and listening), Canadian Experience Class TEER 2 or 3 (5), Federal Skilled Worker and CEC TEER 0 or 1 (7) and maximum FSW points at 9 and above.

This is planning information, not immigration advice. Check the official IRCC language test page for your own program before you book.

How should you plan CELPIP preparation in 4 or 8 weeks?

A CELPIP study plan works best around the free official tests. Take the free sample test in week 1 to learn the format, then a free full practice test under real timing as your diagnostic. Spend the middle weeks drilling your weakest component, and take a second full practice test 5 to 7 days before test day.

Pick the length by your gap. If your diagnostic already sits at or near your target in every component, 4 weeks of format practice may be enough. If one or more components is two or more levels below your target, take 8 weeks. For the general method behind these tables, see the study plan for any exam.

Example: a full-time worker targeting CLB 7 whose diagnostic shows 8 in Reading but 6 in Speaking would follow the 8-week table, double the Speaking recordings in weeks 3 to 6, and keep Reading to one timed set a week.

CELPIP prep timeline: free sample test in week 1, a CELPIP Account practice test as a diagnostic, weeks 2 to 6 drilling the weakest component with webinars, a free practice test from the form 5 to 7 days before, then test day, followed by a bracket showing results must be less than 2 years old at both the Express Entry profile and the PR application.

Can you prepare for CELPIP in 3 days?

Three days is enough to learn the format, not to move your level. Use them to take the free sample test, watch the webinar for the component you fear most, and record yourself on all 8 speaking tasks once. If you need a higher CLB level, postpone the test.

How do you practice CELPIP Writing and Speaking without a teacher?

Practice Writing and Speaking under the real time limits, then review your own output against the task. Record every speaking answer and listen back. Reread each email and survey response for task coverage, tone and errors. The free official webinars cover each component and give you a model of what the tasks ask for.

A self-review checklist you can reuse for every attempt:

  • Timer set to the task time before you start, never paused.
  • Writing Task 1: every point in the prompt answered, tone right for the person you are writing to.
  • Writing Task 2: one clear choice, reasons that support it, no drifting into the option you didn't pick.
  • Speaking: recording replayed the same day, long pauses and restarts marked.
  • Speaking Task 3 and Task 8: describe what you see in a fixed order (left to right, or big picture first) so you don't run out of things to say.
  • Error log updated: one line per repeated mistake, tagged by task.
  • Vocabulary you reached for and couldn't find, added to a vocabulary notebook.

If most of your Writing errors are grammar (verb tenses, articles, prepositions), review those topics separately for 15 minutes a day.

As someone who learned English and French as an adult, I'd add one thing: listening back to your own recordings is uncomfortable at first, and that is exactly why it is easy to skip. Do it anyway.

What paid official CELPIP study materials are available?

If the free resources aren't enough, the official CELPIP store sells extra preparation: online practice tests, an Interactive Learning Program, study guides and books such as Vocabulary Skills, Common CELPIP Errors, CELPIP Focus: Reading and Writing and CELPIP Focus: Listening and Speaking. Online courses and instructor-led prep programs are also listed.

The CELPIP prep overview page groups the paid options into three tracks:

  • Self-directed study: online practice tests, CELPIP study guides and textbooks.
  • Online study: the online course CELPIP Accelerate, CELPIP Practice and Analysis, and online practice tests.
  • Classroom study: the CELPIP Preparation Program, run by test centres and other organizations.

Buy paid material only after your diagnostic shows where the gap is, and check current prices in the official store.

How do you track CELPIP practice test results?

Keep three simple records: the week-by-week plan, a practice-test log with the date and score for each component, and an error log by task type. They can live in a calendar, a spreadsheet or Notion. What matters is that each full practice test shows whether your weakest component is moving toward your target CLB.

A practice-test log needs six columns: date, test source, and one per component. If a component hasn't moved between the diagnostic and the final rehearsal, that is where the last week goes.

The error log is where most of the value sits. Tag each mistake by part or task ("Listening Part 5," "Speaking Task 6") and count the tags each Sunday. The most frequent tag decides next week's drills.

For the same approach applied to other English and French exams, see the TOEFL study plan and, if you are considering the French route to Express Entry, the guide to TCF and TEF Canada preparation.

FAQ

Is there a free CELPIP practice test?

Yes. The official site offers a free online sample test, a free practice test when you create a CELPIP Account, and free practice tests through a short form on its Free Practice Tests page, plus over 10 hours of free webinars.

How do I practice for the CELPIP exam?

Start with the free sample test, take a full practice test under real timing as a diagnostic, then drill your weakest component with timed sets and recorded speaking answers. Take a second full practice test 5 to 7 days before test day.

Is 7 a good CELPIP score?

CELPIP 7 equals CLB 7, which is the minimum IRCC sets for Federal Skilled Worker in all four abilities.

Is it easy to get 9 in CELPIP?

There is no official data on how hard it is. What IRCC does publish: CLB 9 or higher earns the maximum 6 Federal Skilled Worker points per ability, compared with 4 points at CLB 7.

How long is the CELPIP test?

CELPIP-General takes about 2 hours 50 minutes in one sitting. CELPIP-General LS takes about 1 hour 10 minutes.

How long are CELPIP results valid for Express Entry?

IRCC requires results to be less than 2 years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence. CELPIP scores are valid for two years from the date the score report is issued.

Can I prepare for CELPIP in 3 days?

Only for format familiarity. Use the free sample test, one webinar and a recorded run of all 8 speaking tasks.

What is the difference between CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS?

CELPIP-General tests all four skills and is the version IRCC accepts for Express Entry. CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking and is for Canadian citizenship applications.

Is CELPIP tougher than IELTS?

IRCC doesn't publish a difficulty comparison between approved tests. The more useful check is which tests your program accepts, which IRCC lists on its Express Entry language test page.
