The TOEFL iBT changed on January 21, 2026, and a lot of the free practice material online still shows the old test. This guide points you to the official free practice tests in the current format, explains what changed, and gives you a 4-week and an 8-week study plan built around those two tests.

Where can you get a free official TOEFL practice test?

ETS, the organization that runs the TOEFL, offers three free practice options on its TOEFL iBT prep page: an Interactive Sample and two Full-Length Practice Tests labeled January 2026. You fill in a short form and the test launches in your browser. ETS also runs a prep portal called TOEFL TestReady.

Start with the official material, because only ETS can publish tests that use real TOEFL items and the current task types. Third-party tests can be useful for extra drilling, but many were written for the pre-2026 test and some still score you out of 120.

Here is the current official map, checked on 11 October 2026:

Interactive SampleFreeA short preview of the real test; complete the sample questions to download the Test OverviewDay 1, to see the interface and task types
Full-Length Practice Test 1 (Jan 2026)FreeA complete test in the current structureWeek 1, as your diagnostic
Full-Length Practice Test 2 (Jan 2026)FreeA second complete test in the current structureAbout one week before test day, as a dress rehearsal

TOEFL iBT Test Prep Planner (PDF)FreeETS describes it as "a free, 8-week plan" with tips, activities and sample questionsOptional; check that the tasks it lists match the 2026 test before following it

Two free full-length tests is not a lot, so treat them as checkpoints, not as daily practice. The study plan below is built around that limit.

What changed on the TOEFL iBT in January 2026?

Since January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT score reports use a 1–6 scale in half-point steps for each of the four sections and for the overall score, aligned to CEFR levels. For a two-year transition period you also get a comparable 0–120 overall score. The test is now adaptive, and several task types are new.

According to the ETS score page, the new scale is meant to line up more closely with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the A1 to C2 levels many universities and employers already use. Your overall score is "the average of all four sections, rounded to the nearest half band," per the ETS content page.

An adaptive test is one where later questions adjust to how you are performing, so test time and the number of items can vary from person to person.

A band score is a single number on the 1–6 scale that places you at a proficiency level. ETS's score scale update says a 5 in any section aligns with C1 for that section, and the top score, 6, aligns with C2.

How to spot outdated TOEFL practice material

Before you spend an evening on a free test from a random site, check it against this list. If any of these apply, it was written for the old test:

  • It asks for an "independent essay" or an "integrated essay."
  • It reports section scores out of 30 and a total out of 120, with no 1–6 band.
  • It has no Complete the Words, Build a Sentence, Listen and Repeat or Take an Interview tasks.
  • Its page or file was last updated before 2026.

Old material is not useless. Long academic reading and lecture listening still matter. Just don't use it to predict your score or to practice your timing.

What is on the TOEFL iBT now?

The current TOEFL iBT has four sections: Reading (about 30 minutes, 50 items), Listening (about 29 minutes, 47 items), Writing (about 23 minutes, 12 items) and Speaking (about 8 minutes, 11 items). ETS says to allow about two hours in total, and there are no scheduled breaks during the test.

All numbers below come from the ETS test content page, which lists them as approximate base times. Because the test adapts, ETS notes that "test time and items may vary."

SectionItemsApprox. timeTask types
Reading5030 minComplete the Words · Read in Daily Life · Read an Academic Passage
Listening4729 minListen and Choose a Response · Listen to a Conversation · Listen to an Announcement · Listen to an Academic Talk
Writing1223 minBuild a Sentence · Write an Email · Write for an Academic Discussion
Speaking118 minListen and Repeat · Take an Interview

ETS adds that these base times do not include directions. The practical takeaway: Speaking is now short, and Reading and Listening carry most of the minutes. No scheduled break means you need to sit for two hours with full attention, which is something to practice, not just know.

You can take the test at a center or as the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, on your own computer with a live human proctor.

TOEFL study plan: 4 weeks and 8 weeks

A good TOEFL study plan uses Full-Length Practice Test 1 in week 1 as a diagnostic, spends the middle weeks drilling your two weakest sections by task type, and saves Full-Length Practice Test 2 for about a week before test day. Pick the 8-week plan if you are more than about one band below your target.

The general method behind this plan (diagnostic, targeted drills, rehearsal, taper) is the same one described in our study plan for any exam. Here it is applied to the TOEFL. Daily time is up to you; what matters is that each week has a clear job.

Is 2 weeks enough for TOEFL?

Two weeks is enough to learn the format, not to move your English level much. If your practice test is already at or near your target band, two weeks can work: take Practice Test 1 on day 1, drill the new task types for ten days, and take Practice Test 2 about three days before the exam. If you are a full band or more short, consider moving your test date.

No plan can promise a score. The point of a short plan is to make sure the format doesn't cost you points your English has already earned.

How do you practice the new TOEFL task types?

Practice each new TOEFL task type on its own before mixing them. Complete the Words, Build a Sentence, Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview are short, high-frequency tasks, so a few minutes of daily drilling adds up quickly. Then use timed mixed sets to train switching between tasks without a break.

Reading

  • Complete the Words. Try it in the Interactive Sample first so you know exactly what it looks like. The skills behind it are spelling and word forms, so keep a list of the words you misspell in practice and review it daily. A simple vocabulary notebook plus spaced repetition works well here.
  • Read in Daily Life. Practice with real notices, emails and schedules. Ask yourself: who wrote this, and what do they want me to do?
  • Read an Academic Passage. Read the first sentence of each paragraph first, then answer. Time every set.

Listening

  • Listen and Choose a Response. These are quick exchanges, so the skill is catching tone and intent. Short everyday audio (podcasts, campus videos) is good training.
  • Conversations, announcements and academic talks. Take short notes of who, what and why. Lots of comprehensible input, meaning audio you understand most of, builds the listening speed these tasks need.

Writing

  • Build a Sentence. Errors here are usually word order or grammar. Group your mistakes by pattern (question order, verb tense, articles) and drill one pattern per day.
  • Write an Email. Practice a clear structure: purpose, details, request, polite close. Write to a timer.
  • Write for an Academic Discussion. State your position in the first sentence, give one reason with an example, and respond to what others said.

Speaking

  • Listen and Repeat. Record yourself and compare with the audio. Focus on stress and chunking, not accent.
  • Take an Interview. Answer with a point, a reason and a short example. Practice three questions a day on everyday and academic topics.

I learned English and French as an adult, so I know how easy it is to spend weeks on general study and never practice the exact task you will be scored on. With the new short task types, ten focused minutes a day on one task is a realistic habit.

How long are TOEFL scores valid and when do you get them?

TOEFL iBT scores appear in your ETS account 3 days after your test date, and a PDF of your score report can be downloaded about a day after that. Scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. During the transition period, reports show both the 1–6 scores and a comparable 0–120 overall score.

These details come from the ETS score page. After two years ETS no longer reports the scores, so if your applications run over a long period, plan your test date with that in mind.

The score you need depends on the program or employer. There is no single "good" TOEFL score, so check each school's admissions page, and confirm whether they now state requirements on the 1–6 scale, the 0–120 scale or both.

How should you track your TOEFL prep?

Track three things: your band per section from each practice test, your error types by task, and the date of your next checkpoint. A paper calendar, a spreadsheet or a Notion page all work. What matters is that you can see, every week, which task type is still costing you the most points.

A simple setup is one row per study session with the date, section, task type, minutes and the main error you noticed. After two weeks, sort by task type and you will see where your time should go. I work in Notion every day, but the method works the same in any tool.

If you are preparing for Canadian immigration rather than a university, read our CELPIP preparation guide too, and check which tests your immigration program accepts.

FAQ

Where can I get a free TOEFL practice test?

On the official ETS TOEFL iBT prep page. It offers a free Interactive Sample and two free Full-Length Practice Tests in the January 2026 format.

How do I prepare for the TOEFL test?

Take Full-Length Practice Test 1 as a diagnostic, drill your weakest task types for 3 to 6 weeks, then take Practice Test 2 about a week before test day. Use the 4- or 8-week plan above depending on how far you are from your target.

How long is the TOEFL now?

ETS says to allow about two hours. Because the test is adaptive, test time and the number of items can vary.

How is the new TOEFL scored?

Each section and the overall score are reported on a 1–6 scale in half points, aligned to CEFR. During a two-year transition you also get a comparable 0–120 overall score.

How rare is 120 in TOEFL?

Since January 2026, 120 is no longer the main scale. The top score is now 6, which ETS aligns with C2 and with 114 or more on the old 0–120 scale. We found no official ETS figure on how rare a top score is, so we don't estimate it.

How long is a TOEFL score valid?

Two years from your test date. Scores appear in your ETS account 3 days after the test.

Is there a break in the TOEFL?

No. ETS states there are no scheduled breaks during the TOEFL iBT test, so practice at least one full test in a single sitting.

Is 2 weeks enough for TOEFL?

It is enough to learn the new format and take both free practice tests, but rarely enough to raise your English level by a full band. If you are well below your target, a 4- to 8-week plan is more realistic.
